Homecoming 2008

1946
One year since the end of the Second World War. Ted Williams leads the Red Sox to their first pennant since 1918, winning the American League MVP in the process. Frank Capra wins the Golden Globe for Best Director for "It's a Wonderful Life". Future director and Eagle Scout Steven Spielberg is born. Science fiction author and futurist H. G. Wells (whose "War of the Worlds" would later be adapted by Spielberg) passes on. "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" is first recorded. ENIAC, the first unclassified computer, is switched on. And in Plymouth, a fledgling staff of young men works hard to host the first-ever summer camp season at the new Camp Cachalot.

2008
The Red Sox are once again a dominant force in the American League, coming off their second World Series win in three years. Steven Spielberg's latest directorial effort dominates the Memorial Day box office results. Computers vastly more powerful than ENIAC are in many homes. And back in Plymouth, members of Cachalot's "Class of 1946", that first summer camp staff, return to Cachalot to talk about their experiences during that very first season, at the Camp Cachalot Alumni Association's fourth annual Homecoming Weekend.

Homecoming Info

On Saturday, July 12th, 2008, starting at noon, come join your fellow alumni at Camp Cachalot for an afternoon at Camp. We'll fire up the grill for lunch down by Tom Cullen Field and give a quick update to our members before listening to the '46ers. We'll also be taking "class photos" of the alumni who come down for the day, and, for those who'd like to share, videotaping or recording your own camp stories for our "Living History" project. Camp will also be open for you should you want to take a look and see what has or hasn't changed since your time at "the place we know so well".

Homecoming 2008 is a free event for members and non-members alike. Lunch is optional, with a suggested donation of $5 to help us defray the cost. Camp will remain open until 5pm, and we'll have guides available if you want to have a look around but don't quite remember the way.

As always, our History Committee will be on-hand to scan your photos and slides or photograph any memorabilia that you'd like to show off. Bring along your items to be scanned, or bring your digital pictures in almost any format. Contact curator@cachalotalumni.org if you have questions about this. If you have a large number of photos or slides, we may not be able to handle them at the event but would still like to make arrangements to capture them, so please contact us at that email in that case.

Registration Details

Even though this is a free event, we'd still appreciate it if you'd let us know you're coming, especially if you plan on joining us for lunch.

Additional Information

If you have questions that aren't answered here, please drop us an email message at homecoming2008@cachalotalumni.org. The Narragansett Council office may also be able to answer some questions via telephone at (401) 351-8700.

Dig out that old Camp shirt & hat, head on out to Cachalot, and get ready to share your memories and a whole lot of fellowship with all of the other alums!

See you in July!
