Family Camping for Alumni Members

Every Memorial Day weekend and Labor Day weekend, Camp Cachalot is open to the members of the Camp Cachalot Alumni Association and their families to enjoy. The Narragansett Council graciously extends this opportunity to our registered members.

Registration and Attending

For all of our family camping weekends, sites are available on a first-come, first-served basis. The weekends are free, and open solely to our members and their families. People planning to attend are asked to please "pre-register" by sending us a quick email at familycamping@cachalotalumni.org noting how many people will be in your party, your expected arrival and departure times (we won't turn you away if you haven't pre-registered, but it helps with our planning.)

You should plan on arriving after 4:00pm on the Friday, and plan on departing by 11:00am on Monday. Only tent sites are available, as Cachalot is neither equipped nor licensed for trailers or campers. Families are responsible for their own meals. There are usually some loosely structured activities organized by individuals, but there is no formal program. Allowing people to spend time with their families is the main purpose of the weekend. Once upon a time, we also did some service projects as part of the weekend (check out some of the past projects below), but we now conduct a separate "Beaver Weekend" explicitly for service to camp.

A Note About Camp Rules

All of the usual camp rules & regulations are in effect. If you haven't been to camp in a while, please read through them before you arrive. As a courtesy to other campers, many of whom camp with young children, sites are expected to be quiet by 10:00pm each night.

Past Service Projects

Just to give you an idea of the kinds of service projects we've undertaken in the past, here's an (incomplete) list of some of the things we've done at our family weekends:

  • Re-stained and re-painted the Dining Hall
  • Re-stained the Waterfront Tower
  • Cut and installed new Trex decking on the waterfront docks
  • Installed a new fence at the waterfront
  • Assembled picnic tables
  • Assembled tent platforms
  • Re-sided a portion of the 21 Club
  • Various small conservation projects
